Jason Dent from Hobart has become the first epilepsy sufferer in the world, who is implanted with a device, which will give him an early warning of a seizure. Mr. Dent has faced serious seizures, since the age of four years.
Doctors at St. Vincent Hospital in Melbourne have put an implant into his chest and wired this to his brain, last week.
This device will observe the electrical activity for 24 hours, from the brain’s surface and then this will send the information to the device. Jason Dent carries this wireless pager- type device with him as with this device Bent would be more comfortable, while working and playing.
Mr. Jason is an employee in a supermarket. This implant assures that by the warning, he will be able to reach the hospital, before the seizure gets a grip on him.
"There are some periods in my life where I wouldn't have any seizures for up to two or three months and then I might have two or three in one week”, he told AAP.
The device will show a red light, in the case of high risk, the white light on the device will be a signal of moderate risk and the blue light will indicate a low risk. The device can be put on vibration or sound mode, depending upon the patient’s discretion.
